Expense app on iPhone, without the App Store

On iPhone you can install applications straight from the browser: no store, no Apple account, no pending updates. They are called web apps and they work better than that sounds. They also have limits, and it is worth knowing them first.

What a web app is

A web app is a site built to behave like an app: you add it to the home screen and from then on it opens full screen, with its own icon, no address bar and no tabs. Underneath it is still the web; from the outside you would not know.

Apple has supported this for years under the name “Add to Home Screen”. It is not a shortcut to a website: the app stores its data on the phone itself and can open with no connection.

You probably use one already without realising. It is what sits behind plenty of work dashboards, several booking services and more than one internal company tool. In a well-built one the difference from a native app does not show in daily use; it shows in everything around it, and that is what the rest of this is about.

Installing it in three taps

It has to be done from Safari. That is the most important limitation and the reason half the people who try never manage it: from Chrome on iPhone the option does not show up the same way.

1. Open the site in Safari.

2. Tap the share button, the square with the upward arrow, in the bottom bar.

3. Scroll down the list to “Add to Home Screen” and confirm.

That is it. The icon sits with the rest of your apps and opens the same way. To uninstall, press and hold the icon and delete it: it goes with its data and leaves nothing behind.

If the option is missing

Four reasons, in order of frequency:

You are in Chrome or Firefox. The usual one. On iPhone, “Add to Home Screen” lives in Safari. Copy the address, open it in Safari and try again.

You arrived from another app’s browser. Opening a link from email or a social app launches an in-app browser window that does not have the option. Look for the button to open in Safari —top or bottom depending on the app— and then share.

You are in a private tab. Private browsing saves nothing, and that includes the install. Leave the private tab and try again.

The site is not set up for it. Not every page can be installed: it has to declare its icon, its name and how it wants to open. If the option appears but the result still shows the address bar, this is why.

To check it installed properly, open it from the icon and look for two things: no address bar at the top, and an icon of its own rather than a thumbnail of the page. If you see both, you are done.

On Android

Easier, and with fewer conditions. Chrome usually offers a bar suggesting you install the app; if not, it is in the three-dot menu as “Install app” or “Add to Home screen”.

The meaningful difference from iPhone is that on Android an app installed this way behaves almost like one downloaded from the store: it shows up in the app drawer, in system settings and in the recent-apps switcher. Notifications do not need the extra step either.

What you gain

No store in the middle. No Apple account, no borrowing someone’s phone, no permission to grant. You open the site and add it.

No updates to install. You open the app and it is already the latest version. There is no pending list and no badge you ignore for weeks.

It takes almost no space. A few megabytes against the hundred-odd of an average native app.

Same app everywhere. Phone, tablet and computer open the same thing. For logging an expense the phone wins; for reviewing the month or importing a statement, a big screen wins by a mile.

It works offline. In a well-built one the data lives on the phone, so it keeps working underground and syncs when signal returns.

What you lose

With the same honesty, what you will not get:

It does not appear in App Store search. If the way you find apps is searching “expenses” in the store, you will not find this one there.

Widgets and shortcuts are limited. A native app can place a widget on the lock screen; a web app, today, not quite.

Notifications need one extra step. They work on iPhone, but only after you have added it to the home screen, not before.

It installs from Safari only. Said above, and it is the catch that confuses people most.

Delete the icon and you delete the data. The data lives on the phone. If the app syncs with an account you log back in and it is there; if not, it is gone. Which is why being able to export matters.

Where your data ends up

This is the part most people skip and the one that causes the most grief. In a well-built web app the data is stored on the phone itself, which is what lets it open offline. That has two consequences.

The first is good: you do not depend on signal to log an expense, and what you write is on your device before it is anywhere else.

The second needs keeping in mind: the phone can reclaim that space when storage runs very low, and deleting the app takes its data with it. So any app you are going to put months of transactions into should do two things.

Sync with an account of yours. Then, if you change phone or delete the icon, you log back in and everything is still there. In Sumant that is what signing in does: your data syncs encrypted and tied to your account.

Let you export whenever you want. A file you download yourself and can open without the app. It is the only real guarantee that your data is yours, and it is worth testing the export on day one rather than on the day you need it.

Who it makes sense for

For anyone logging expenses manually it makes a lot of sense: it is a thirty-second daily task that gains nothing from being native, and finishing the month on a computer is a real comfort.

For anyone who wants the app to read their bank on its own it changes nothing: that depends on whether the app connects to your bank, not on how it was installed.

For anyone who needs lock-screen widgets or system shortcut integration, a native app still wins today. And for anyone who shares a phone, nothing changes either: whoever has the phone unlocked gets in regardless of how it was installed.

The quick way to decide: if your aim is to log fast and review calmly, install it from the browser and skip the store entirely. If your aim is for the app to do things while you are not looking, ask first about what the app does, not about how it installs.
